Winch (Quai de la Pinède)

Cast in sand in the shared yard on the Marseille docks, from aluminium recovered from a decommissioned mooring winch on the Quai de la Pinède.

Vasco does not clean up a cast. The sand mould leaves a coarse, faintly granular skin, the bolt holes of the original are still present, and on the underside a serial number survives from the source machine, having now been melted twice. He regards these as facts about the object rather than as marks of authenticity, and he does not point them out unless asked.

Weight is 940 kg. The work sits directly on the floor without a plinth and requires a pallet truck and two people to position. Installation guidance is supplied.
