Winter blocks are made while Nagai is also making the following year’s paper, a six-week stretch of physical work in cold water that she says leaves the drawing hand tired in a way nothing else does. Whether this is visible in the sheets is a question she declines to answer.

What is visible is a change of paper partway through. The batch from the winter of 2021 runs out on 19 January 2023 and the sheets after that date are heavier and take the ink more slowly.
