Skagerrak, January to December 2024
A year of shipping through the Skagerrak, translated into a weave pattern and run on the loom Lindqvist rebuilt in the late 1980s.
The source is transponder data, which she logs herself and has been logging in some form since the 1970s, first from a coastguard radio. Vessel movements become a set of instructions and the instructions become cloth. Lindqvist does not adjust the output. If a month is quiet, the weaving is dull for that stretch, and the dull stretch stays.
Read closely the pattern is legible as data, with the dyed wefts marking vessel categories. Read from across a room it behaves like a coastline, which Lindqvist regards as a coincidence of scale and not a meaning.
Woven in one piece over eleven weeks. Hanging batten supplied.
