Slow Weather (Waalhaven)

The largest panel in Slow Weather and the one that took longest. Krohn began the ground in January 2025 and did not consider the painting finished until April 2026.

The panel carries around forty passes of dilute pigment, each floated onto the chalk ground and then abraded back with wet paper while still soft. None of them is individually legible. What remains is a stain held in the tooth of the ground, warmer along the lower third, cooling towards the top edge in a shift of perhaps two or three values.

The title names a day in the Waalhaven, the Rotterdam port basin Krohn walks most mornings. It is not a description of the painting and Krohn is firm on the point: the works are not skies. The weather in the title is the weather of the making.
