Untitled (Utrecht 14)

From the middle of the nine-year working period, and one of the warmest canvases Doorn produced.

The grey is mixed from lead white, lamp black and raw umber, the only three pigments found in the studio inventory taken after her death. Under low light it reads as brown. Under the north light of the room on the Oudegracht where it was painted, it would have read as almost neutral.

Three soft vertical divisions, none of them aligned to the edges of the stretcher. Contemporaries treated the misalignment as a considered position on the Dutch tradition of the divided plane. Doorn said it was because the room was narrow and she could not step back.
