The Fold Remembers

Eleven metres of hemp, folded in a repeating concertina, clamped between wooden battens and lowered into a fermentation vat in four stages over nine days.

Bahri keeps her vats alive rather than mixing them fresh, which means the colour a vat gives changes across its two or three year working life. This piece came from vat five in its fourth month, when the reduction was strongest and the blue went nearly black in the exposed passages.

It is hung from the same points at which it was bound. This is not a display decision. The geometry that produced the pattern is the geometry holding the work in the air, and Bahri regards any other installation as a different work.
