Dyke at Four Eleven

A single sitting in January, unusual for Achterberg, who normally builds a canvas over four to six afternoons.

The title is the time he stopped. He notes it on the back of every stretcher along with the date and the temperature, a habit from his first year working outdoors that he has never seen a reason to drop.

The paint is thinner here than in the larger works, close to a wash in places, and the weave of the linen carries most of the tone.
