Slow Weather: Ilse Krohn

Gallery Borry presents Slow Weather, an exhibition of eleven new paintings by Ilse Krohn, at Hazenstraat from 12 June to 6 September 2026. This is Krohn’s fourth solo exhibition with the gallery.

The panels were begun in January 2025 and finished in April 2026, and they are hung in the order they were made. Each is built on a ground the artist prepares herself, eight to eleven coats of chalk bound in rabbit skin glue, sanded flat between applications over about three weeks. Pigment is then floated on in dilute washes and abraded back with wet paper while still soft, a cycle repeated up to forty times on the largest work.

No single gesture survives this process. What remains is the residue of several hundred of them, held in the tooth of a ground built to hold it.

Krohn studied at the Willem de Kooning Academie and worked for nine years as a paper conservator before painting full time. Her work is in the collections of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen and the Kröller Foundation.

An opening reception will be held on Thursday 11 June from 18:00. A conversation between the artist and conservator Anneke Ruitenbeek takes place at Hazenstraat on Saturday 29 August at 15:00.
