Six artists, one shipyard, no theme worth the name
Manders arrives sceptical of a summer group show with no stated argument and leaves having decided that the absence is the argument.
Bregje Manders reviews GROUNDWORK at Borry Noord for Onrust, and spends the first third of the piece explaining why she expected not to like it.
Her objection going in is the familiar one about summer group exhibitions: six artists, a large industrial space, and a press release that declines to say what connects them. What changes her mind is Prieto’s line of nine vessels along the north wall, which she reads as the clearest statement in the room precisely because it explains nothing and simply shows nine outcomes of the same procedure.
She is less convinced by the Ellul, which she thinks is underserved by the hall, and she makes a good case that the work needs a smaller room than the one it was given.
