Marta Enkel paints the apartment you had to leave
Verschoor reads the nine panels in The Annex against the Amsterdam rental market, then concedes that Enkel would rather talk about how long oil paint stays open.
Ilja Verschoor’s piece on Notes for a Wet Room for Metropool Review opens with the housing argument and spends the rest of its length complicating it.
Verschoor points out that Enkel has lived in eleven apartments in fourteen years, that every room in the exhibition is rented and most are gone, and that the paintings dissolve. Having made the case, he then quotes the artist declining it, and lands on the more interesting observation that the one-sitting rule produces its own kind of loss: for every panel on the wall there are several that were scraped down the same night.
He is right that the smallest work in the room is the best one.
