Gallery Borry has worked with the same small group of artists since 2011, across two spaces in Amsterdam. We show long exhibitions, publish printed matter for most of them, and prefer to keep working with an artist for a decade rather than a season.
The gallery opened in November 2011 in a single ground floor room on the Hazenstraat, with an exhibition of drawings that did not sell. It has expanded twice since: The Annex on the first floor in 2016, and Borry Noord, a former ship fitting hall on the NDSM wharf, in 2019.
The programme is deliberately narrow. Thirteen artists and one estate, most of whom have been with the gallery for five years or more, working across painting, sculpture, textile, ceramics, photography, drawing and video. What they share is not a medium or a generation but a way of working: each of them starts from a physical procedure and lets the result follow from it. That is the closest thing to a house position we have.
Exhibitions run long, between eight and sixteen weeks, because the work generally needs more than one visit and because a six-week show is an expensive way to be forgotten. Most are accompanied by a printed publication, produced in-house and priced to be bought rather than admired.
Visiting
Hazenstraat is open Tuesday to Saturday and does not require an appointment. Borry Noord is open Thursday to Sunday from spring to autumn, and by appointment in winter. The wharf hall is unheated and partly uncovered, which is worth knowing before you plan a February visit.
Both spaces are step-free. The Annex is on the first floor and is reached by stairs only, which we are working on. If you would like to see work that is not currently on view, write or call and we will arrange it.
Working with us
Everything is sold directly through the gallery. Prices are given on request rather than published, condition reports are supplied as a matter of course, and we will always tell you what a work has done at auction if it has done anything at all. We do not run a waiting list system and we do not place work with buyers we have never spoken to.
